House of Prayer No 2: A Writer's Journey Home : Richard, Mark: Amazon.sg: Books

The mother is happy, and the father buys the special child a Confederate hat. After the sister leaves, the mother loses another baby. The father brings the special child another beagle puppy home. The first one, Mud Puddle, ran away in Texas after the father drove it from Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Kirbyville, Texas, strapped to the roof of the car.

Might even lift my self-imposed book-buying ban so I don't have to wait for my small-town library to acquire it. This astounding memoir follows this “special child”, growing up in rough-hewn Appalachia, subjected to torments from his peers, going through painful surgeries, to correct his deformed hips and finally landing him in adulthood, aimless and confused. When you're trying to finish, you get a new issue of Entertainment Weekly, where this book is on a list of the 10 best non fiction of 2011. You shake your head, wondering how your opinion can be so vastly different from a critic in a national magazine. In the meantime, you hope that this review helps illustrate your feelings, while expressing that it doesn't even come close to replicating the author's style.

Details of the beer tents, dates, times, FAQs, photos and plenty more. By car, take the Autobahn A9 north from Munich and turn off right onto the A93 just after the town of Geisenhausen. The journey should take about two hours.

Those of us who love Mark Richard's writing often complain that he doesn't do more of it. Yet I'm grateful he chose not to take up residence in some comfy English Department, where he might so easily have missed the variety of experience that has enriched and shaped his understanding of the world and man. The only part of the story the child does not quite believe is that somehow Ulysses was older than Jesus. He doesn’t say anything to the oil dealer, because the oil dealer was being nice, but he will have to ask Miss Perk about that later. On the weekends, they break their promises to picnic with their families at Indian caves they have found and ride everybody around on the bush motorcycles they use to put out forest fires. Instead, the father and the German spend every extra hour of daylight cutting sight lines with machetes, dragging “borrowed” surveying equipment, and measuring chains around the edge of the empty lake.

House of Prayer No. 2: A Writer's Journey Home Hardcover – 15 February 2011

In the beginning I found the use of 2nd person rather cumbersome, but the story carried me on. As I continued the POV became no trouble at all and by the end made perfect sense to me. It’s a real bummer he’s not pumping out fiction right now, but who could blame him?

MARK RICHARD is the author of two award-winning short story collections, The Ice at the Bottom of the World and Charity, and the novel Fishboy. This short autobiography is interesting in that it is written in the second person. A unique story of a physically special child, who has to have numerous surgeries in a time when children were often abandoned or unable to be helped in these rehab hosptials of the south. The author then embraces life full force in a series of rolicking jobs which seem dangerous and very risk taking.

You exclaim, this is yet another person "saved" by religion (though this one does so after decrying his mother's extreme, err, devout religious behavior). Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. This is a Southern Gothic memoir, and the first I enjoyed that was written in second person. It was odd at first, but eventually I accepted all the escapades as things I might have done when I was a wild young man.

I very rarely give myself permission to abandon a book, but this one pushed me over the edge. Entirely written in second person ("you . . . do this, you do that"), you gradually feel exhausted, as if you're being constantly told what to do. There is an old saying, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" that's what I took away from this beautifully written book. I also liked the prayer lists that his mother kept. The timber company gives the father a partner so they can reseed the thousands of acres of forests they are clear-cutting down to nothing. The German knows everything, just ask him, the father says.

And yet that is all the reader is left with--the ache and confusion and hopelessness. In that regard "A Year of Magical Thinking" and "Blue Nights" resemble too many recent, often lesser efforts at memoir. Is a remarkable portrait of a writer’s struggle with his faith, the evolution of his art, and of recognizing one’s singularity in the face of painful disability. The money they give the old black sharecropper for the secret shoreline is all the money they can scrape out of their savings and their banks.

Did you know we carry?

Such an achievement to be able to capture that, to have the vision to see it and the art to communicate it. And perhaps it is also because Richard understands his story as more than the story of his own life, that in its great particularity, he recognizes an unchanging story, perhaps the same one Solomon tells in Ecclesiastes. Whatever the reason for his choice, Richard's second-person is a cantor, a singer of a mysterious and elevated song.

The father then says, You know, if you were able to figure exactly where the shoreline will be, and buy that land, you could make a small fortune. The House of Prayer No.2 is a terrific memoir of the life of Mark Richards. The author, Mark Richards, presents a different perspective on his life through this interesting biography. As a young child with deformed hips, Richards is said to spend the rest of his adult life in a wheelchair, “With or without nails, your son will probably be in a wheelchair by the time he’s thirty anyways” .
